Acura’s Sporty MDX Luxury SUV

Honda’s luxury brand Acura launched in the USA in 1986, beating both Lexus and Infiniti to the punch by three years. All new for 2022, the fourth generation Acura MDX is Acura’s best-selling model, now entering its third model year. Right now Acura is pushing a number of incentives to move unsold models of the MDX. Be sure to check with local dealers for best promotions.

The MDX now shares a platform with the Honda Pilot, but is worth its price premium for a host of reasons. The base MDX comes in either front-wheel drive or “SH” all wheel drive (+$2,200), the “Super Handling” all wheel drive system that pays homage to the active torque transfer system in the fifth generation Honda Prelude SH. The MDX comes in majestic black pearl, liquid carbon metallic, fathom blue pearl, performance red pearl, lunar silver metallic, and platinum pearl white.

The standard engine is a single overhead cam 290 horsepower, 3.5L V-6 engine, in a world that is increasingly relying on turbocharged four cylinders. An optional double overhead cam 355 horsepower / 354 lb-ft of torque 3.0L turbo V-6 is available on the Type S trim. All models have a 10 speed automatic transmission that helps the MDX achieve 26 MPG highway in non Type-S trim. Double wishbone suspension ensures the MDX doesn’t handle like a wet noodle, and the Type S trim adds air suspension with adaptive height adjustment and Brembo brakes. Seven driving modes include snow, comfort, normal, sport, sport plus, and lift (with more ground clearance).

MDX trims are numerous, but in a world where Toyota Siennas cost fifty thousand dollars, the MDX strikes us as something of a relative bargain. The Base MDX starts at $50,150 msrp and includes heated power 12-way sport seats with leatherette trim, tri-zone climate control, all power options, leather wrapped steering wheel, 9 speaker audio, 12.3 inch HD center display, a host of safety nannies for lane departure and parking assist, panoramic moonroof, LED headlights and tailights, heated side mirrors, and 19 inch wheels. The $54,850 msrp Technology package steps up to Milano premium leather seats and 20 inch wheels as well as Acura Navigation system. A Spec, $60,550 msrp, gets NSX-inspired Milano red leather with ultrasuede trimming, A-Spec Design exterior package with 20 inch shark gray wheels, and a 16 speaker ELS Studio 3D audio system. The Advance Package, $64,100 msrp, adds heads up display and 16 direction power front seats. The Top of the heap Type S starts at $68,450 with the aforementioned air suspension and 21 inch wheels; the Type S Advance starts at $73,800 with exclusive Azurite Blue leather and massaging seats.

Acura’s maintenance program covers complimentary maintenance for factory scheduled service for up to two years or 24,000 miles, including oil changes, tire rotation, and multi point inspection. All MDX models come with a 4 year, 50,000 mile limited warranty, as well as a 6 year, 70,000 mile powertrain warranty.
